Suicide hits West Virginia harder than most states, but a simple legislative fix could turn those tragic numbers around: raise the minimum wage.
Raising the minimum wage and increasing the earned income tax credit help less-educated, low-wage workers hit hardest by what are now known as “deaths of despair.” This is according to an analysis of data from 1999-2015 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at University of California at Berkeley reported on recently by the Washington Post.
West Virginia is proof of this with one of the highest suicide rates in the country. We are consistently ranked in the top ten worst states.
But this is a tragedy that can be reversed and West Virginia should lead the charge.
